Best Waterfalls in Helen, GA
Anna Ruby Falls
Located in Chattahoochee National Forest, Anna Ruby Falls is created by two creeks cascading over the drop-off. The water that falls into the pools below becomes part of Smith Creek and makes it way towards the lake. The trail leading towards the falls is a half mile long, paved, and relatively easy. Hikers looking for a more challenging course may find the 4.6 mile long Smith Creek Trail much more accommodating.
DeSoto Falls
DeSoto Falls was named after the legend that made it famous. It is said that Spanish armor was found here that possibly belonged to the famous explorer, Fernando DeSoto, or one of his men during their search for gold. Although you won’t find gold in the area, the falls are enough treasure to behold. The short trail with moderate elevation makes DeSoto Falls one of the most popular cascades in Helen.
Dukes Creek Falls
The trail leading to Dukes Creek Falls is nearly two miles long and winds along Dukes Creek Gorge and gorgeous forest scenery. At the end of the trail, you’ll find a 150-foot cascade that will take your breath away. Wooden platforms are available at the top of the gorge for viewing of the waterfall. You may also choose to continue your hike and embark towards the bottom of the falls.
Raven Cliff Falls
Raven Cliff Falls flow right through an enormous rock formation in the middle of the lush woods. The 40-foot tall waterfall can only be reached by a 5-mile hike through the lush forest. As you embark, you’ll cross streams, discover many smaller waterfalls, and find beautiful wildflowers. The trail is nestled underneath the canopy of tall trees, so the hike stays relatively cool, even in the summer.
Amicalola Falls
Amicalola is Cherokee for “tumbling waters,” and this cascade lives up to its name. Amicalola Falls is the tallest waterfall in the state at 729 feet tall and is the perfect destination for a North Georgia day trip. The trails leading to the waterfall provide stunning mountain views before descending alongside the falls by wooden bridges and stairs. Despite its relatively short distance, the trail can become difficult for some due to its steepness.
