Dahlonega, GA Gold Mine History
After the discovery of gold in 1847 by the Crisson family, the property was quickly converted into a mine. Like many other mines in this particular area, it started as a tunnel operation. As time went on, mining techniques were improved and the new open pit operation began. Open pit mining is the most successful way to find gold-bearing quartz. In 1969, Crisson Mine was the first mining operation in Dahlonega to open to the public. Today, visitors still dig from the same quartz that gold miners did nearly 150 years ago.
