3 Spots for the Best Trout Fishing in Georgia

1. Chattahoochee River

All year round, the Chattahoochee River offers some of the opportunities for North Georgia trout fishing. However, many fishermen claim they are most successful in the late autumn and early winter, when Georgia trout fishing season is in full swing There are also fewer restrictions for the Chattahoochee River, meaning you can use nearly any type of hook or bait. 12-14 inch rainbow and brown trout are plentiful in these waters, which attract many fishermen throughout the year! To avoid the crowds, you may want to visit the Chattahoochee Wildlife Management Area just up the river from Helen.

2. Unicoi State Park

You’ll find some of the largest basses in Helen in the waters of Smith Lake at Unicoi State Park! The 44-acre lake is recognized as the centerpiece of the park and provides plenty of fishing opportunities surrounded by a stunning landscape. There are many docks located around the lake for anglers searching for bass, catfish, rainbow trout, and brown trout. The lake is open for fishing during trout season from late April until October.

3. Duke’s Creek

Many fishermen overlook Duke’s Creek under the assumption that the fish will be too difficult to catch. On the contrary, they would be pleasantly surprised to know that Duke’s Creek is actually one of the best fishing areas in North Georgia. In fact, Southern Living Magazine called the body of water the “holiest of holies in Georgia trout-catching circles.”  Anglers at Duke’s Creek enjoy less pressure than the typical pay-to-play fishing operation and the chance to catch gorgeous trout all at the cost of a $5 parking fee. Only 15 fishermen are permitted to the creek in the morning and then 15 more in the afternoon each Wednesday, so be sure to reserve your spot in advance!
