Where to Hike the Appalachian Trail in Georgia
Helen is home to some of North Georgia’s best hiking trails, many of which connect with the Appalachian Trail. If you’re eager to blaze into new adventures and discover the region’s natural beauty, these are the trails for you!
Blood Mountain Loop: This trek leads you to the highest summit on the Appalachian trail in Georgia! You will travel through beautiful fern-filled forests, alongside streams, and upwards towards a jaw-dropping mountain view. The trail is six miles long and considered a bit strenuous to inexperienced hikers. However, seasoned hikers and those who love a challenge will thoroughly enjoy this journey.
Unicoi Gap to Tray Mountain: Cross over gurgling creeks and through wildflower forests along the way to two mountain summits. During this hike, you’ll encounter beautiful natural wonders, including the views from the top of Rocky Mountain and Tray Mountain. The hike is also considered difficult and not recommended for first-time hikers. However, if you believe you can hike the 10-mile loop, we promise the views are worth it!
Tesnattee Gap to Cowrock Mountain: This is one of the most popular short day hikes in Georgia, and for good reason! It is only 2.25 miles long and winds through the beautiful and rocky forests of Raven Cliff Wilderness. From the top, you’ll love the scene of blue-green hued peaks in nearly every direction.
Indian Grave Gap: Venture through canopies of laurel and fern-blanketed forests as you travel to the Tray Mountain summit, which offers stunning views of Yonah Mountain and Lake Hiawassee. It’s a 5-mile stretch of undeniable beauty you won’t be able to get enough of.
